PICK OF THE WEEK: KNOCKED UP
In case you haven't been paying attention, it's been an unusually good year for funny movies. "Superbad," "Hot Fuzz," "Waitress," "Rocket Science" and "The Simpsons Movie" all earned critical praise with diverse approaches to humor (and we could even stretch to include slightly more unconventional examples like "Ratatouille" and "The King of Kong").
But, in many ways, the year's standout comedy remains "Knocked Up." The early summer success anointed Seth Rogen as a new comedy star and confirmed writer/director Judd Apatow's status as Hollywood's hottest comedic voice of the moment. For the story of an unlikely one night stand that leads to an unplanned pregnancy, Apatow returned to the alternately raunchy/sweet vibe that made his "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" a breakout hit, and also reunited with some of that film's key cast members including Rogen, Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann.
If you're already a fan from its theatrical run you'll most certainly want to own "Knocked Up," but you'll have to take your pick from five different DVD versions. There's a R-rated theatrical version, an unrated extended edition (available in wide screen or full frame), a HD-DVD release and a 2-disc special edition featuring the unrated cut. All versions contain bonus features including a commentary with Apatow and Rogen, deleted scenes and a gag reel but the unrated versions also include additional raunchy scenes and featurettes. The double disc contains even more features, including leading lady Katherine Heigl's audition tape (it's hard to believe now that Anne Hathaway was originally cast in the role) and Apatow's production video diaries.
